Precision Manufacturing Capabilities Across Six Processes

Pen Cutting Tools offers a comprehensive range of precision manufacturing services, each delivered to tight tolerances with full CNC capability across multiple processes.

Wire Erosion / EDM: CNC wire and EDM erosion across a work envelope of 800mm x 800mm x 350mm. Standard tolerance of ±0.005mm, with large-format submerged wire erosion featuring 6-axis machining. Specialising in tool steels, carbide and PCD, with CAD/CAM programming for complex profiles.
Grinding: Internal and external cylindrical grinding to 0.002mm tolerance, with cylindrical capacity to 600mm diameter and flat grinding to 1000mm. Rotary grinding up to 700mm is also available. Form tools produced to 0.005mm, including crush rolls and drawing rolls ground by Diaform or full CNC profile grinding in steel or tungsten carbide.
Optical Grinding: Two full CNC optical grinders, the only two of their kind in the UK, offering up to 50x magnification and tolerances of ±0.002mm. Complex forms are regularly produced in steel and tungsten carbide to a surface finish of 0.2Ra.
Turning: Manual and CNC turning up to 1 metre diameter x 1.5 metres in length, using Spinner, Deckel, DMG Mori and Hitachi Seiki equipment. Live tooling, Y-axis and sub-spindle capability enable efficient machining of materials up to 65 Rockwell hardness to ±0.010mm.
Milling: Milling capacity up to 1500mm x 610mm x 500mm, with 3+2 machining and 12,000rpm spindle speed. Tolerances of ±0.010mm on hardened tools and ±0.005mm on soft components. Autodesk CAD/CAM enables work directly from customer models.
Brazing & Welding: Full brazing and welding facilities to bond high-wear materials onto steel bodies, reducing finished tool costs. Natural industrial diamond can be fixed to complex probe shapes for in-process measurement, alongside formed PCD.

All work passes through a temperature-controlled inspection department, with surface analysis available via Talysurf form measurement. Coatings including TiN, TiCN and Futurer are available on finished components.
